Our photography business was born from the infamous Shower-Cap Dogs® Pose that proved extremely popular amongst our dog grooming clients...
Who would have thought that a simple shower cap would lead Stephanie down another dog-focussed career path? Stephanie answers a few frequent questions:
How did the photography aspect come into play?
"I have always enjoyed capturing photo's of the pamper process to allow dog parents to have a glimpse behind the scenes. I wanted to show more than the typical 'before' and 'after' shots, I wanted to show the entire service - from introduction, to play time and especially bath time. That's when I started snapping the Shower-Cap Dogs® pose!"
What is the 'Shower-Cap Dogs®' pose?
"It actually started after I had got my hair done and I was going back to work the same day. I decided to buy a shower cap at the local pound shop on the way to prevent my hair from getting frizzy. In jest, I popped one on the Bulldog I had in and took a selfie. I thought it looked cute, so I posted it online and everyone went nuts! I started getting loads of bookings from as far as Glasgow, all for the Shower-Cap Dogs® pose. I trademarked the idea shortly after!"
When did it become a professional service?
"I enrolled on a Portraiture college course but was surprisingly disappointed to be told on day one that animal photography was out of the question. I walked out and decided to start at-home studying instead. I joined loads of animal photography forums and began using my grooming client dog's to practice different styles of photography. Particularly action shots - playing and catching treats. But it wasn't until the COVID-19 lockdown commenced that I was really able to get right into the technicalities of it, and using my family dogs I began harnessing my skills in portraiture once more using my make-shift studio in my spare room. I am now pretty confident I can take some pretty great photo's".
For a dog parent, what makes you the best dog photographer to choose?
"My strengths are in dog communication. I have learnt how to work with all breeds of dogs in all circumstances. I specialise in fearful dogs because I have learnt methods on how to handle them safely. I am working through my Canine Behaviour Diploma via the ISCP also, and I've already passed my Safe Dog Handling Diploma with Disntinction as well as, my Low Stress Handling Certification to which I am Silver Certified. I work with my dog clients in a way that helps them relax, because of this, I am able to get amazing shots relatively quickly."
What kind of shots are you most excited about and why?
"I'll always have a soft spot for my Shower-Cap Dogs® photo's because that's where I first realised my love for photography. But as a qualified microchip implanter, I am really interested in puppy shoots, particularly littermate and mum shoots. The idea is to capture some raw, emotional photos of the bond between a mum and her pups. I think this would make a really wonderful souvenir for the Breeder, but also for the littermates' forever homes. I would have loved something like this for all of my dogs".
